Stand Firm in the Gospel
By Michael Youssef, Ph.D.
Every day we are fed messages from this world. Most of us would rather not admit how we are influenced by the secular media and by pop culture. We can often quote more television catch phrases than Scripture verses, and our children make role models out of celebrities rather than godly leaders. Paul warns us, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).
When we conform to this world, we begin accepting the belief that whatever the majority is doing or saying or thinking must be right. And as secularism creeps into our thinking, we become more self-focused and self-centered. We become overly concerned with personal happiness. Our prayers no longer seek God’s will but our own desires. Even our attitude toward church becomes self-serving.
The Christians of the New Testament felt this same pressure to conform to the world. Paul encouraged Timothy to stand firm in knowing and in obeying the will of God, to stand firm in the true Gospel, and to stand firm in following God’s purpose for his life. We must do the same.
Prayer: God, help me not to conform to this world. Give me strength to stand firm in You. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13).
