The Difference One Can Make
Many of us look at the staggering needs of the world today and say, “What can I do? Can I really make a difference for Christ?” But God has placed all of us in a position to impact lives for eternity.
Read 2 Kings 6:24-7:7. King Ben-Hadad of Syria had set out to destroy the people of God, and he was winning. He had surrounded the people of God, and now all of Israel was starving to the point of cannibalism. Ben-Hadad was sure that victory was his. But what he didn’t realize was that all it would take for Israel’s ultimate victory was for one man to be on his knees, crying out to God. And Elisha, despite overwhelming odds, was doing just that.
From this posture of faith, Elisha made a great difference. Though the king of Israel sought Elisha’s head, blaming him for the current plight of Israel, Elisha did not lash out at the king or point fingers.
Instead, he announced good news from the Lord: “Tomorrow, the siege will be over. Our captivity will be broken. Freedom is coming.”
Even now, God is calling each of us to be like Elisha--to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to a desperate world. This is God’s mission for His church.
Whether you are 15 or 75, no one can say, “I can’t make a difference.” God has not only endowed you with talents but commissioned you to be a bearer of Good News to a hopeless world. Some of us may be commissioned by God as prayer warriors, overseas missionaries, or supporters of those missionaries. But there is just one thing we cannot do. We cannot sit on our blessed assurance of salvation, our hope of eternity with Christ, and do nothing.
In the Bible, God never holds us responsible for the results--but He does call us to act. Not every lost person will respond to the Gospel, but God has called us all to be “the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 Corinthians 2:15). As God once answered the prayers of Elisha, causing the Syrian army to flee, so God will answer our prayers for salvation and deliverance.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your promise to be with me as I go to follow You in Your mission. Thank You that You bring the fruit. May I be faithful in the work You have given me to do. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 Corinthians 2:15).
