From Luther’s marriage to Katharina von Bora and his partnership with Melanchthon, to the aftermath of the German Peasants’ War, Protestant princes like Philip of Hesse and John the Steadfast fought to defend their faith against Emperor Charles V and the Catholic Church. The Diet of Speyer (1529) and the Protest that gave Protestants their name marked a turning point in the Holy Roman Empire, shaping the future of theology, politics, and Europe itself. After the Diet of Worms in 1521, Martin Luther vanished under the protection of Frederick the Wise, living in disguise as Junker Jörg at Wartburg Castle, where he translated the New Testament into German and launched a publishing revolution. Meanwhile, Andreas Karlstadt, the Zwickau Prophets, and radical reformers pushed Wittenberg into chaos until Luther returned to deliver the Invocavit Sermons. His marriage to Katharina von Bora shocked Europe, but it was the German Peasants’ War of 1524–1525, led by Thomas Müntzer and fueled by the Twelve Articles, that forced Luther into his most controversial decision—calling on princes and Emperor Charles V to crush the revolt.
