In our 52nd episode of Church History, Pastor Lance explores the burgeoning lives and legacies of the Mendicant Orders: Franciscans and Dominicans. We are taken on a journey through the development of these two paths, and meet the figures who came to shape their impacts among Christendom and the secular world as well. From Saint Francis of Assisi's Franciscan Order, to Spain's Dominic de Guzman and his Dominican Order, these men embodied Christian philanthropy and were the sociological reformers of their age. The orders they birthed supplied the new universities and study of theology with some of their brightest lights. Figures like Thomas Aquinas, Albertus Magnus, and Durandus, were Dominicans; and John of St. Giles, Alexander Hales, Adam Marsh, Bonaventura, Dun Scotus, Ockham, and Roger Bacon were all Franciscans. Each story helps us understand the roots of traditions that would come to define this medieval period; and go on to influence many thousands of believers for centuries thereafter.
