This conflict between the Church and the state in medieval Europe was waged over the ability to choose and install people to positions within the church - bishops, abbots of monasteries, and even the Pope himself, in an act known as Investiture. Throughout the 11th and 12th centuries, a series of popes continually undercut the power of the Holy Roman Emperor and other European monarchies, and eventually the controversy escalated into almost 50 years of conflict.
