This lesson traces the tragic division of Israel into two kingdoms following Solomon’s death. Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, arrogantly rejects wise counsel and listens to his peers, threatening harsher rule. This sparks rebellion among the northern tribes, who break away to form their own kingdom under Jeroboam. God warns through the prophet Shemaiah that the division is part of His judgment. Yet both new kings quickly fall: Rehoboam repeats Solomon’s mistakes, and Jeroboam sets up golden calves and false priests to keep his people from returning to Jerusalem. Though God sends a prophet to confront Jeroboam, the king remains unrepentant, revealing how miracles may impact the body but not necessarily the heart. The prophet himself is judged for disobeying God’s direct command, serving as a sobering warning: obedience matters. The lesson emphasizes the dangerous progression of pride, poor counsel, and compromise—and calls believers to take God’s Word seriously and walk faithfully.
