From Luther’s marriage to Katharina von Bora and his partnership with Melanchthon, to the aftermath of the German Peasants’ War, Protestant princes like Philip of Hesse and John the Steadfast fought to defend their faith against Emperor Charles V and the Catholic Church. The Diet of Speyer (1529) and the Protest that gave Protestants their name marked a turning point in the Holy Roman Empire, shaping the future of theology, politics, and Europe itself.
