In 1529, the Diet of Speyer revoked religious tolerance, sparking the Protest at Speyer by Philip of Hesse, John the Steadfast, and imperial cities that gave Protestants their name. At the Diet of Augsburg in 1530, with Martin Luther banned under the Edict of Worms and confined at Coburg Castle, Philip Melanchthon presented the Augsburg Confession before Emperor Charles V, defending justification by faith, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and Lutheran reforms against Catholic abuses like indulgences and clerical celibacy. The Confession, rejected by the Catholic Confutation, became the foundational statement of Lutheran Christianity, showing how the Reformation had moved from protest to institution while the Schmalkaldic League prepared for armed conflict in the Holy Roman Empire.
