The Kingmakers Come Calling

In this lesson on Matthew 2, Stephen Davey explains that the visit of the wise men reveals God’s sovereign plan to announce the birth of the Messiah not only to Israel but also to the nations. The magi were influential scholars and kingmakers from Persia who recognized the supernatural “star” as a sign of the promised King of the Jews, likely influenced by generations of teaching connected to the prophet Daniel and Old Testament prophecy. While King Herod responded with fear, jealousy, and murderous intent, the wise men responded with worship, presenting gifts that symbolized Jesus as King, High Priest, and sacrificial Savior. Davey emphasizes that every detail surrounding Christ’s early life—including the journey to Egypt and return to Nazareth—demonstrates God’s perfect control and faithful protection of His Son, reminding believers today that God remains sovereign over every circumstance and carefully directs the lives of His people.
