This episode examines the decline of American Christianity after the Great Awakening, as the Revolution, Enlightenment thought, and religious pluralism reshaped the New World. Featuring figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Wesley, and John Witherspoon, we trace how deism, natural rights philosophy, and political upheaval weakened church life. We also explore the roles of Peter Muhlenberg, Francis Asbury, Samuel Seabury, William White, and John Carroll, alongside the struggles of Baptists, Methodists, Anglicans, and Presbyterians in a rapidly changing nation. As revival faded and institutions fractured, America approached what historians call the low point of Christian influence—setting the stage for the Second Great Awakening.
