How to Conquer Anxiety

A man in the crowd interrupts Jesus to ask Him to settle an inheritance dispute, and Jesus refuses—then goes straight for what's underneath the request: greed. In Luke 12, Stephen Davey works through the parable of the rich farmer whose real problem wasn't his surplus but his spirit, a man so governed by the fear of not having enough that he never gave a thought to God or anyone in need. From there Jesus gives His disciples a three-part antidote to anxiety: think correctly (consider the ravens and tell yourself the truth), live generously with an open hand, and invest in what actually lasts. The story of J. C. Penney lands the point—financially ruined and mentally broken, he wandered into a hospital chapel one night, heard a hymn, and gave his life to Christ at fifty-six. Earth's moneybags all have holes in them. The comfort at the center of the message is simple enough to sing: God will take care of you.
