Syncretism and Unsavory Doctrines
According to Ligonier Ministry's Matt McGhee, "The Lord is using ... digital media to ... massively distribute ... sound Biblical teaching in Latin America to combat that syncretism and other unsavory doctrines that are being promoted in the region." I find it interesting that Matt uses the word "unsavory" to describe false teaching. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, one of the definitions of "unsavory" is "morally offensive."(1) The Apostle Paul takes it a step further. Listen to his warning to the Galatians:
"I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:6-9, NKJV)
As we faithfully and carefully study Scripture, we will more easily recognize erroneous teaching, and we will begin to find it offensive when a fasle teacher perverts the Gospel. But, we must not stand still in our outrage, we must be actively involved in distributing the truth of God's Word to "combat ... unsavory doctrines."
