In the apostles' day, as teachers and missionaries traveled through Corinth, Gaius often served as their gracious host. Paul mentions this gracious man at the end of Romans:
"Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you." (Romans 16:23, ESV)
Then in 3 John, John commends Gaius for faithfully supporting these itinerant teachers like Paul:
"Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth." (3 John 5-8, ESV)
Notice that John mentions that the missionaries had accepted "nothing from the Gentiles" ("pagans"-NIV). It was the responsibility of the Church to support them. That model is still applicable for the body of Christ in our day. As believers in Jesus, "we ought to support" missionaries, that we too "may be fellow workers for the truth."
You will hear an excellent example of this type of support on today's Footsteps where I interview Rich Hooper, Station Manager of KJRN in Keene, TX. Rich talks about his radio station's involvment with CUPS Mission in Africa. As Rich tells the story of how KJRN listeners provided much-needed resources for some pastors in Malawi, I hope you will be inspired to do the same and become a "fellow worker" by generously supporting Christian missionary efforts around the world.
