His Museum Piece
Congregation Mickve Israel in Savannah is the third-oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. They officially formed in 1735 after 42 Jewish colonists made the journey from London to Georgia. A few summers ago, our family toured their current sanctuary which has been in use since 1878. Along with spending time in Mickve Israel's museum where we read historic letters from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Robert E. Lee, we had the honor of seeing their hand-written Torah. Above even their historic letters, their Sever Torah is the congregation's prized possession. Why? Because it is God's Word. In a very similar way, I'm sure that's why the Russian man in today's Footsteps valued his typed version of the Gospel of Mark. As missionary Bobby LaDage described it, this man's Bible was his "museum piece...worth more than anything he had."
