We Might Die
On July 3, 1863, over 12,000 Confederate soldiers advanced across nearly a mile of open field in an attack on the Union position at Cemetery Hill in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This famous assualt during the American Civil War is known as Pickett's Charge. When these soldiers from the Army of Northern Virginia took their positions in line, they knew that they might be killed during the attack. In fact, over 1,100 of them lost their lives that hot and humid afternoon. Over 5,000 more were either wounded or captured.
In today's Footsteps, Olesya Vasylenko of TWR-Ukraine talks about the dangerous fighting that has been taking place in her country since 2014. When Olesya courageously says, "We don't know what will happen in (the) future, but we want to serve the Lord to the end...and if even God let us die, we want to remain faithful," I'm reminded of those Civil War soldiers who remained loyal to the Confederacy and to General Lee even as they were marching to their death. But in the case of the TWR staff in Ukraine, their loyalty is to Almighty God and their country is an eternal kingdom in Heaven.
