I grew up reciting The Apostles' Creed every Sunday in church.  It begins with "I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried."  Now, I want you to think about the phrase "suffered under Pontius Pilate."  Why was Pilate's name mentioned?  The reference to Pontius Pilate anchors Christ's crucifixion to a specific time in history.  As seminary professory Dr. Doug Bookman puts it in today's Footsteps, "the faith of the Bible is grounded in history."
