In the 6th chapter of Mark, we read about the feeding of the 5,000.  But, we often quickly read through verse 34 which says, "And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.  So He began to teach them many things" (NKJV).  We frequently focus on the miraculous meal forgetting what Jesus did first.  Because "he was moved with compassion for them...He began to teach them."  He both taught them and fed them.  Ari Clowney of Tearfund's Inspired Individual Initiative refers to this two-pronged approach as meeting both material and spiritual poverty.
