It Began with a Tiny Radio
While sailing from England to New England in 1630, John Winthrop delivered his famous sermon "A Model of Christian Charity" to those on board the Arbella. As he addressed those who would become part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the Puritan leader declared, "For we must consider that we shall be as a city on a hill." Over three hundred years later, both U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan referred to Winthrop's "city on a hill" in describing their dream for America. So, is the United States a shining "city on a hill?" Are we letting our "light shine before others" (Matthew 5:16, ESV) as Jesus commanded? I'm not so sure. But it sounds like a particular community in South America is shining brightly. On today's Footsteps, TWR's Lemuel Larrosa tells us about a village in Bolivia where 18 of 25 families have all accepted Christ. The goal is for this community to become 100% Christian. As these Bolivian believers display their "good works and glorify" God, may they indeed become a "city on a hill" for the rest of their countrymen to see.
