Just a Marvel
In business, the term "Return On Investment" or "ROI" is used frequently to meausre the efficiency of a particular investment. But, should we be using that term in ministry? I hear it from time to time from church missions committees. These churches are seeking to measure the results from the financial support that they are sending to missionaries. On one hand, I certainly don't see a problem with a missions committee wanting a report from a missionary in the field. Accountability is a good thing, and it's needed in missions. However, on the other hand, I don't think we can put a specific price tag on ministry. You see, we are not alone in our ministry work. We have a "majority partner" in Jesus, and we operate on His timetable. I like what Andrew Sundar, TWR's International Director for South Asia, has to say about this topic--"We are presenting the Word of God and letting the Spirit of God bring transformation...When I hear people responding and coming to know the Lord, it's just a marvel!" So, should we be looking for a certain number of saved souls or baptisms, a return on investment, or should each one of us be asking ourselves and our missionaries "Am I fulfilling the will of God" in the work to which God has called me? Am I simply being faithful? Then, when we see fruit from our labor, it's easier for us to keep the proper perspective and marvel at the work our great God has done through us.
