In this sermon on Jonah 1:4–16, Stephen Davey explains that no one can successfully run from the presence, authority, or purposes of God. As Jonah fled from God’s calling, the Lord pursued him through a violent storm that exposed both Jonah’s rebellion and the emptiness of his attempt to escape obedience. Davey highlights the striking contrast between Jonah’s spiritual indifference and the desperate spiritual awakening of the pagan sailors, who eventually came to fear and worship the true God while the prophet himself resisted repentance. The message demonstrates that disobedience always carries a higher cost than expected and often damages the testimony of believers before the watching world. Yet even in Jonah’s failure, God’s grace remained active, using Jonah’s imperfect witness to bring others to faith and continuing to pursue His rebellious servant rather than abandoning him.
