The Battle Begins

In this message, Stephen Davey continues his series "The War Within" by entering one of the most debated and desperately needed paragraphs in Scripture, Romans 7:14-17, where Paul cries that he does the very thing he hates. Davey sets out to answer the crucial question that shapes the whole passage: who exactly is Paul describing when he speaks of being sold into bondage to sin? Carefully weighing six major views—from an unbeliever, to a carnal or immature Christian, to Paul before his conversion—Davey makes the case that Paul is describing himself as a committed, growing believer locked in an ongoing struggle with indwelling sin. He shows that only a true Christian hates sin, grieves over it, and delights in God's law, and that the closer a believer walks with Christ, the more aware he becomes of his own shortcomings. Davey reminds listeners that becoming a Christian does not end the battle with sin but begins it—driving the believer again and again to depend on Jesus as Advocate, Savior, and Redeemer.
