Introducing … the Holy Spirit

In this message, Stephen Davey continues his series "The War Within" in Romans 8:2-4, where the apostle Paul makes a special introduction of Someone who has come into the believer's life and taken the heart away—the Holy Spirit. After a lighthearted opening at the State Fair, Davey establishes that the Spirit is not a force or a feeling but a real Person, then unfolds why Paul calls Him "the Spirit of Life"—the One who brought the universe to life, brings spiritually dead hearts to life at conversion, and awakens spiritual discernment in the believer. Using the vivid picture of a hand catching a falling Bible to interrupt the law of gravity, Davey explains how the Spirit supersedes the law of sin and death that once held us down, even as we still battle the presence of sin in our flesh. He shows that walking according to the Spirit has both a passive and active side—something God does in us and something we choose—and that we can know we are walking in the Spirit when our lives shine the spotlight on Christ rather than on ourselves. He closes with the moving testimony of a newly converted prisoner named Charlie, who, with only a borrowed devotional and a Gideon bookmark, was led by the Spirit to bring four fellow inmates to faith in his first days behind bars.
