One Nation Under Greed (Exodus 20:17)

Have you ever caught yourself wishing for what someone else has? Their home, their job, their marriage, or their level of success. The desire feels small at first, but where does it lead? What does God say about the inner pull that no one else can see? In this episode, Stephen Davey opens Exodus 20:17 and the tenth commandment. You shall not covet. Stephen begins by showing that this command targets attitude rather than action. It addresses the secret places of your heart that no one else can observe. Covetousness is built on comparison, and comparison quietly steals contentment from your relationships, your possessions, and even your marriage. Stephen then turns to the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12. He identifies three failures in this man's life. He failed to consider his neighbor, wrapping himself up in the words I, me, and my. He failed to recognize his own mortality, assuming many years of self-indulgence still lay ahead. And he failed to acknowledge God, building a life rich in possessions but poor toward Him. From there, Stephen draws two diagnostic questions from the rest of the chapter. What is more important to you, getting more financially or growing up spiritually? And what concerns you most, having money you can manage or having God manage you? This message will challenge you to look inward with honesty. Some of the richest spiritual seasons come not when you have plenty to manage, but when you have learned to rest in the hands of God. Stop asking more from God and start asking more of God. Pursue His kingdom first, and watch how He cares for everything else.
