Beauty and Two Beasts (Part 1)

One chapter after David spares Saul's life in the cave, he's strapping on his sword and vowing to wipe out an entire household over a snub. Stephen Davey walks through 1 Samuel 25, where a wealthy rancher named Nabal—whose name literally means "fool"—repays David's protection with insults, and David's temper goes from zero to murder. What stops him is Nabal's wife, Abigail, who rides out with a caravan of food and delivers one of the most tactful, courageous speeches in all of Scripture: don't stoop to his level, don't take matters into your own hands, and don't stain tomorrow's royal robes with today's revenge. The sobering takeaway is that David had survived assassination attempts without flinching, then nearly ruined everything over a pin prick. Yesterday's victory is no guarantee against tomorrow's temptation—and sometimes God's rescue comes from the person you least expected.
