Every summer for six years, legendary coach Vince Lombardi opened Green Bay Packers training camp the exact same way, holding up a football in front of seasoned veterans and saying, "Gentlemen, this is a football." Those six years produced five championships. Stephen Davey borrows that story to introduce the fifth of Peter's seven spiritual supplements in 2 Peter 1:6: godliness, a word Davey defines simply as bringing the presence of God into every experience of life, not just Sunday morning. He tells on himself a little, recalling his own adult child once telling him he was the most sanctified man alive, until he got behind the wheel of a car. Davey ties godliness to contentment, arguing real spiritual growth shows up less in how you look at church and more in whether you've stopped comparing your life to everyone else's. Like an athlete, he says, you never graduate past the basics. You just keep training.
