I can’t believe they didn’t make the team. Seriously?

Has your child been there? Julie Anne asked if I would talk about how to be sensitive to disappointment when our kids don’t make a team or get a part in the play. In our empathy, it’s easy for us to make them out to be victims—blaming the coach or director. That happened to my athletic daughter who got cut from the volleyball team. As a former coach, I believed MY daughter was better than many who made the team. As I’m trying to make her feel better, she stopped me and said, “I’m sorry I let you down, Dad.” What? That’s when I stopped and said, “You didn’t let me down. You’re awesome. God knows. Let’s trust Him.” Lesson? Trust God even in the little things.
