Psalm 55 is a lament over betrayal and persecution. The psalmist, who is believed to be King David, cries out to God because a trusted friend has turned against him. He describes how he wishes to escape and how he feels terrified. Yet, throughout the psalm, the believer keeps praying and trusting God’s protection. The teacher highlights how this psalm teaches us that even when friends betray us, we can still rely on God’s help. It also reminds us that prayer is powerful and that God listens even when we are in distress.
